18:26:14  <melloc>Hello all! I'm not sure if this is the right channel for this type of question, but I'm trying to understand the output from d8 —trace-deopt.
18:27:21  <melloc>Is there a good place to reference for how to interpret the deoptimization reasons? Specifically, the one's that I'm seeing are "Smi", "wrong map", and "Unknown map in polymorphic element access".
18:28:46  <melloc>Additionally: Is there some element of randomness to how functions get optimized and deoptimized? Between multiple runs of the same, predictable code w/ d8, I see different deopt reasons printed.

18:33:55  <melloc>(From what I've been able to gather, Smi would be a complaint about not using a small integer, and wrong map would be about changing my usage of an object so that it needs to switch the backing map type. Not sure about the last one.)

19:22:32  <bnoordhuis>melloc: try passing --predictable --norandomize_hashes to d8
19:23:25  <bnoordhuis>melloc: your analysis w.r.t. the bailout reasons looks right to me
19:24:19  <bnoordhuis>"Unknown map in polymorphic element access" means an polymorphic inline cache saw an object shape it didn't expect
19:29:16  * chrisdickinson_changed nick to chrisdickinson
19:30:23  <melloc>bnoordhuis: The code I'm writing makes heavy use of sparse arrays, and the "Unknown map" always comes after the "wrong map", so I'm guessing that when v8 realizes that I'm using the array as a sparse array it switches types, and then has to deoptimize other functions that access the array.

19:32:04  <melloc>Thanks for the explanation!
19:35:57  <bnoordhuis>melloc: that sounds plausible. "element access" hints at indexed properties (i.e. o[42])
